Evening Sun is reminiscent of a late summer evening sunset, providing visitors to your blog with a warm, mellow feeling. With its slick but unobtrusive javascript elements as a novel way to support threaded comments, along with its well structured search engine friendly markup, you should find yourself with more visitors, who stay longer and get involved in your comments.
You’ll also find some neat cases of progressive enhancement - using browser features exclusive to both Firefox and Safari in order to give subtly different presentations.
The theme supports all standard WordPress functionality, is updated for WordPress 2.8 and works on a huge range of browsers.
- Widgeted Sidebar
- Threaded comments support, with javascript sliders to help control unwiedly threads
- Works straight from the box
- Fireworks source images for easy updating
- Great for eco blogging, modders and more
- Light on the server - not too many SQL queries
- GPL from day one! For support, join Spectacu.la soon
- WordPress MU compatible
- Works with all WP versions from 2.1 onwards
Evening Sun is designed for straightforward blogging, with it’s standard two column layout.
This theme is released as a GPL theme right from the initial release. It can be downloaded either from here, or can be viewed and downloaded from the WordPress Extend repository.
We may provide basic support through the comments system and on the WordPress.org support forums, but for guaranteed and reliable support please consider joining the themes club. This will help to pay for the not inconsiderable costs of developing themes and will be rewarded by more themes being released in the future.

Great theme! Thanks for the high-quality stuff. Keep up the really good work. This is the exact type of theme I was looking for.
Sincerely, thank you so much. Just implemented it and it looks great.
This is a great theme. But I’d really like to move the Comments link down to the bottom with Categories and Tags. Can anyone help me out?
I love this theme!
Unfortunately, it does not work on WordPress version 2.8. It gives a whitescreen.
Pleeeeeeeease fix the theme
Hi Marc - it will be fixed very soon. WP 2.8 introduced a ‘correct’ way of doing things which we were already using and, guess what - they clashed!
So we’re going through our themes and fixing them. You’ll be able to see updates on the repository and on this site.
Thanks for a great theme!
I updated to WordPress 2.8 today. Unfortunately your theme crashes the whole site.
Any update in the pipeline?
Sorry! Stupid me!!!
Read first, then write.
Evening Sun is now updated to support WordPress 2.8 - it isn’t available here yet (it’s a different distribution loaded here, with added working images, etc) but is already on the WordPress.org repository - so just head on over there and you’ll be sorted out really quickly!
Finally to Wordpress-2.8-ready. THANKS!!! It was worth waiting for upgrading
Nice job!
Hi,
I really like the simplicity of this theme and would like to use use it.. however i have some questions.
Is this theme available for commercial use?
And I am looking to build a SEO website, do I have to keep the credit line down the footer?
Thanks heaps
Yes, commercial use is fine, and you don’t have to keep visible credits if you don’t want to. But as that’s part of supporting us perhaps you can support us in other ways - a good rating on wordpress.org for example, or paying to join the forums once they relaunch.
Hi Dave,
Thanks for the quick response.
I certainly would give a good rating for this theme.. I really like the simplicity of ur work. Looking forward to the relaunch of ur forum.
Thanks again.^0^
Hi there,
I really like this theme and I’m using it for my blog now. Before I did that, I made some improvements to the code, including:
- Better translation support: everything should be translateable now, the theme has its own translation domain, language file will be loaded automatically from the theme folder, added a .pot file for translators
- Added a German language file
- Make use of post_class (similar to body_class, just for posts)
- Slightly different look for sticky posts
- Added a hook so you can add your links to the footer without modifying the theme
- Use the “automatic_feed_links” function WP2.8 provides (replaces “extraRSSFeeds”)
- For WP2.8+, add an admin menu to configure the depth at which comments start to get collapsed. Only one setting so far, but can easily be extended in the future.
- Display the edit link not only for posts
- A couple of CSS changes, including: less underlined links, highlight current page in the “Pages” widget, make “Recent articles” widget more readable, correct look of “code” and “pre” tags
You can have a look at all these things at my blog (http://robv.de). However, a few changes are done not in the theme but with plugins. If you like my changes, I’d love to see them integrated into the theme. I made a zip file, including a patch (so you see the changes) and a folder with all changed and added files (the latter ones are not in the patch file!). You can download it from http://dl.robv.de/evening_sun_patch.zip. I tested it only with my installation which is WP2.8, I hope it works with older versions, too. It would be easier if it was a WP2.8 and PHP5 only theme, possibly with a branch for older versions where critical changes will be integrated.
Ok, enough for now. If you have any questions about the changes or something, feel free to ask.

Robert - you’ll be pleased to see that we’ve accepted much of what you’ve contributed and already released it. Some changes made to keep with our needs, earlier version compatibility and so on.
Awesome work - thank you!
Using it and loving it
Would be great if to have page selector at the top like in many other themes Thanks >>> http://www.abhishekrane.com
Hi Abhishek - a menu bar of some sort is certainly one of those things that could be considered for the future.
Wow would love to see that in the next version. Can you give a rough idea when the next version of this theme is coming[promise I will keep it a secret
] ? And thanks for this wonderful theme, that makes my blog look so great.
I’m afraid I’ve no idea about that one - it depends on how we’re doing for paid work and what the signups to Spectacu.la are like. As it stands we don’t really make much from this site, so we just do it as a spare time hobby, really. We’d like to make a living from it, but finding the time to invest is hard, and it doesn’t pay for bringing in extra staff. Maybe in the future - encourage people to sign up, if you can, and your theme requests may come sooner rather than later
Helllo, since it is my first contact with Wordpress and your work, and english is not my native language I have a question: I like the mode af action of this theme (I mean arrangement, construction); but is it allowed while working with wordpress (or your theme) to change appearance/background?
Hi Michal - you can do what you like with the theme - it’s GPL. Just remember that when you upgrade to a new version, you need to be careful to carry across your customisations.
It’s worth noting that the next release will include a Polish translation.
Thanks a lot!
I would like to know if this theme supports comment threading?
I just realized I asked a stupid question, I see it now^^ Sorry for the trouble
Is it possible to have the post-calendar like Dovetail/Blend add to this theme? I love that feature, but then i like the look of this theme><
Can you tell me how to increase the width of the main post content area? I use the 1.1.0 version with ebay listings and the ebay drop down area gets cut off. See Website for a picture of what I mean.
Thanks
I just want to sincerely thank you for making this theme. I’ve bastardized the daylights out of it (particularly the graphical elements) to get it working for the specific blog I’m running… but Evening Sun provided me with a very workable and robust framework upon which to modify, and I appreciate the effort that went into making it.
Ein - that’s a really great customisation - love it! We do our best to make themes that can be customised to look completely different - and yours is a brilliant example. Well done!
I too love the simplicity of this theme. I’m stumped, however, in that I’m using it for a static site and would like to remove Comments from the Pages. How would I go about doing that? If I need to pay for this help I’ll be glad to do so. Thanks for your help!
You just need to scroll down in your edit page and you’ll see options for Comments and Trackbacks.
Alternatively, in Settings | Discussion, you can set this across the whole site. You can’t target the settings according to Pages or Posts however.
Well, duhhh, I see I can do that on each Edit/page. Missed that - thanks!! and that will work, but…
I don’t, however, know how to set it site-wide on Settings/Discussion, which would be preferable. I’d looked there, and just checked again, but probably just don’t “get” the jargon. What would I click to make Comments go away?
Sometimes things are so very clear in WP, and sometimes even the very clear things don’t present themselves to me.
I love your theme “Evening Sun 1.1.1″ but I am having two problems:
Sidebar “Category” listing is not showing up on the site though postings are categorized - and -
As below, I’m getting multiple fonts in the tag area where I would prefer not to.
Could you please give me an idea of where I can start looking to resolve either of these issues? Thanks for any guidance you can give. Gary
Thank you for beautiful Themes. We started whit “Blend”
Regards JP
